Ned wasn’t having much success. During the lunch meal, he investigated the blacksmith shop, stock tents and tailor’s wagon to find no clues there. Carolina was certain it was Maria and they had the case almost solved. He had told her not to assume anything. They had a long way to go. It was why he was good at what he did. Sometimes it happened at the last minute, but a good Pinkerton didn’t assume the case was solved until it was solved. They had a lot of work to do.

Being away from her had helped. He didn’t dare to look into her eyes. Mostly, he tried to look straight ahead, speaking to her from a distance or across the table during their meetings each night at the pie tent.

While he was investigating the wagons and empty tents, she had donned her boy disguise to get closer to the animal tents. He had warned her to stay clear of the elephant even though it seemed friendly. Her hoof could crush a person in an instant.

He hoped she’d listen.

Then he heard people shouting in the area where the tiger’s were caged. Others were running towards the busy area.

Ned felt the hairs on his arms stand straight up. Carolina had gone that way to speak with some of the trainers. He hurried past the others, stopping in front of the tiger’s cage. The orange and black striped cat paced back and forth in a corner. He seemed agitated. The gate to his cage was open slightly. The trainer was nowhere to be found.

Carolina stood in one corner of the cage, dressed like a boy, her back up against the bars. She was close enough to the gate she’d be able to get out quickly. But, she didn’t move. She was terrified.

And bald.

Her hat was now sitting in the middle of the cage. He listened to the talk of how she walked past the cage and the tiger took his paw and swiped it off her head. The cat liked to do that when people got too close.

Except, he bet his detective career she decided to make a quick run inside the cage to collect the hat. She was too smart to go into
